What is fire retardant ?

A Flame Retardant substance other than water that reduces flammability of fuels or delays their combustion. This typically refers to chemical retardants but may also include substances that work by physical action, such as cooling the fuels; examples of these include fire-fighting foam sand fire-retardant gels. The name fire retardant may also be applied to substances used to coat an object, such as a spray retardant to prevent Christmas trees from burning. Fire retardants are commonly used in fire fighting. Home fires damage about 400,000 homes, and cause just under 7 billion US dollars in direct damage annually in the United States. Because of the importance of prevention, fire retardation has become a very notable industry.

Chemical actions:

Reactions in the gas phase: Chemical reaction in the flame(i.e. Gas phase) can be interrupted by fire retardant. Generally, these retardants are organic halides(haloalkanes) such as Halon and Phostr Ex. However, there are solutions where the released gas might be more dangerous when this type of retardant is involved.

Reactions in the solid phase: Some retardant break down polymers so they melt and flow away from the flame. Although this allows some material to pass certain flammability tests, there is argument over if the fire safety is truly improved by the production of flammable plastic droplets.

Char information: For carbon-based fuels, solid phase flame retardants cause a layer of carbonaceous char to form on the fuel surface. This char layer is much harder to burn and prevents further burning.

Intumescents: These type of retardant materials add chemicals which causes swelling behind the protective char layer, providing much better insulation behind the protective barrier. In additions to being added to plastics, there are available as paints for protecting wooden buildings or steel structures.

FRX-042 [Flame Retardant Paint Additive]

What is passive fire protection: The fundamental purpose of passive fire protection is to prevent the spread of fire and thus prevent / reduce the amount of damage to the structure or substrate.

How does FRX-042 additive work: Coatings of Paint and ‘FRX-042’ additive mixture provide an appearance similar to that of a paint finish. At ambient temperatures, they remain stable. However, in a fire situation, the increase in temperature causes a chemical reaction and coating expands to many times its original thickness (up to over 50 times). This provides an insulating foam-like coating or "char" which protects the substrate from fire.

Where it can be used: ‘FRX-042’ additive (for water based paints) can be used on walls and concrete and (for enamel paints) can be used on wood, steel etc. (i.e. wherever a paint is normally applied).

How to mix additive: make mixture homogenous (after attaching to a hand drill) with blender can be used repeatedly.

Application: Mixture made of Paint and ‘FRX-042’ additive is best for base-coat finish however any color can also be mixed, if needed. The mixture would require minimum two undiluted coats (second coat after first coat has dried) and will achieve a fire rating of 30 to 60 minutes, heat up to 1000 degree centigrade. It is best applied with Brush.

How long does it last: Lasts as long as the paint. (Paint in an open area specially exposed to rains may reduce the effectiveness if surface is washed off.) (Note: The effectiveness of an intumescent fire resistive coating depends on the ‘coating thickness’ i.e. DFT (Dry Finish Thickness) and requirement typically starts from 200 microns which you should normally get in minimum two undiluted coats as above.

However higher the applied thickness (DFT), higher resistance to withstand a fire of a certain temperature and duration. (An abnormally high resistance required would need proportionate higher DFT taking into account kind of substrate and thus will need calculation from specialists.)

Variants / packing available: Send enquiry.
The amount by which FRX-042 coatings retard a particular fire will depend, among other things, on (i) the amount of FRX-042 coating applied, (ii) the conditions of the other elements of the assembly, (iii) the conditions of the fire itself and (iv) quality of enamel paint used . It is the sole responsibility of the applicator to ensure that FRX-042 coatings are applied in accordance with the application directions, paint is not cracked, chipped or peeling. FRX-042 coatings will only contribute to slowing fire spread for the area where applied and will not, by themselves, prevent a fire from starting or continuing.

How to convert normal paint into FRX-042 [Suitable for both Water and Thinner base]

  1. Pour Enamel Paint, Additive (350 to 400 parts for one Liter of Enamel Paint), Thinner (125 ml for one liter of Enamel paint) into a bucket.
  2. Stir manually till it becomes a mixture
  3. Mix with blender (part of kit to be attached with hand drill – available with all electricians, carpenters, plumbers etc.) for at least 5 minutes or till the mixture is homogenous
  4. Paint is ready for application.

Note: Powder tends to settle down – stir before each pouring and intermittently during application.

Aprox. Coverage: While exact coverage will vary with method, surface finish, condition of application etc., the prepared mixture of one packet of additive with one Liter of paint with required thinner will cover approx. 100 to 110 sq. feet in first coat and 110 to 120 sq. feet in second coat.

Drying Time: Three hours. (Ambient temperature)

Usage of mixture: within 24 hours for best results. For more than 24 hours, add a little bit of thinner if mixture has become thicker. Recommended to prepare only required amount of mixture and always keep it tightly covered.

FRX-06SR [Repellent Coating for FABRIC]

Product Summary

Due to excessive dust and casual maintenance of furnishing fabrics in India, upholstery / carpets / curtains / car seat covers (even suits and sarees) and other kind of fabrics tend to become dirty very soon. Once a fabric has got a stain either let it remain like that or get it changed as dry-cleaning may not bring that freshness back. Now there is another option i.e. protect it with FRX-06SR. It is a chemical specially formulated by M/s KNV’S Inc., one of the PIONNER keeping in mind the climatic and living conditions in India. Once the fabric is treated, it becomes liquid / spill resistant, keeps stains / dirt away and helps fabric remain spotless and fresh much longer.

FRX-06SR works as an invisible protective layer on the fabric without affecting, in any way, the feel/breath/color etc. provides resistance from liquids, soil, dirt, stains and abrasion to all kinds of fabrics (natural and man made). It also makes routine cleaning easier and is an excellent value for money for those who value spotlessness.

Instructions

Use on drapes, furniture, bed mattress, selected areas of carpet such as near a fireplace.

Make sure the fabric is clean, then spray until thoroughly wet. Saturate deep enough to not only wet the outer fabric but to penetrate into the inner materials as well. Spray well in spaces and folds between cushions and other hidden areas. Run your hand over the fabric, rub and pad it in to allow penetration. Use protective gloves if skin is sensitive to the flame retardant material. Allow several hours to dry.

For Use On

  • Cotton and Cotton Blends
  • Paper
  • Rayon
  • Polyester
  • Acrylic Blends (<70%)
  • Cellulose
  • Cellulose Acetates
  • Polyamide
  • Wool
  • Most 100% Synthetic Blends

WHAT SHOULD BE TREATED

Many home construction materials such as dry wall and many types of carpet are naturally fire retardant to some degree or have been factory pretreated. It is items such as drapes, sofas, stuffed chairs, beds and other furniture which pose the greatest threat. These materials may catch fire and burn quickly, just like kindling. Imagine your unprotected drapes catching fire so quickly that they burn from floor to ceiling in a matter of seconds.

Drapes - Spray very wet. Open all pleats and folds to allow for maximum penetration. Spray from both sides for best results.

Furniture - Sofas, Stuffed Chairs - treat all surfaces including folds and spaces between cushions or other hidden areas. Include the bottom, for maximum protection.

Bedding - Mattresses, Box Springs, Skirting. Remove all covers, sheets etc. and treat all exposed areas including underneath the bed for maximum protection.

Carpet - Treat carpet near a fire place (or other fire source such as a heater or water heater). Treat throw down rugs.

APPLICATION

As a general rule, apply:

1 coat - most natural fibers and blends including cotton, rayon.

2 coats- synthetic fibers and blends including polyester.

Remove a small piece of the fabric after treatment and test for flame retardant efficiency. Apply additional coat if necessary.

WARNING

Flammability performance should be verified for each fabric treated. Performance may be influenced by the amount of spray applied and by the type of fabric being treated.

Spray a small test area before applying. Some fabrics do not have water fast dyes and may bleed when exposed to water base solutions.

Washing with water will remove the flame retardant material from the fabric. Reapply after washing. May withstand 3 dry cleaning cycles with standard dry cleaning solvent.

May not be effective for some fabrics.

  • Will not work on vinyl or material >70% acrylic -will not penetrate.
  • Nylon -may require additional coatings
  • Leather -has natural fire resistance.
  • Silk -may form water stains.

COVERAGE RATE

The required quantity depends on the absorbency of the material, its inherent flammability and its overall weight. As a rough guide:

The maximum amount of FRX-06 Fire Retardant Fabric Treatment required is equivalent to the original weight of the material to be treated (80 to 100%). i.e. if the dry fabric starts out weighing 1 kg, then it should pick up between 0.8 to 1 kg. of solution during treatment and retain an additional net added weight of 5.6 to 7 oz. after drying.

FABRIC CLEANING AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Detergents and water or shampooing (i.e.: of drapes, carpets, etc) will remove Frx-06 Fire Retardant Fabric Treatment and re - application will be necessary. Re - Treat after laundering.

APPLICATION TO STRAW, PAPER AND OTHER CELLULOSE-BASED PRODUCTS

Hay or Straw Bales for Display: Approximately 1 quart of FRX-06 Fire Retardant Treatment per bale is required for good penetration. Spray on with an atomizer nozzle.

Cardboard: Corrugated cardboard is best treated with a fine atomized spray on both sides. Do not soak material in any one spot for too long a period, since this will warp the cardboard and make it lose its shape.

Paper and Decorative Materials: Thorough saturation of paper with a spray will work. For best results, hang paper during spraying. Total immersion can be used but a test sample is advised.

Applications

Dip or spray Material to be treated must be soaked & squeezed in such a manner that after drying, the weight of material increases by about 15 to 18 percent. Ordinarily this can be achieved by dipping or spraying on the material till fully wet as required for the duration of 2 to 10 minutes. Grey canvas should be soaked for one hour to twenty four depending upon its weight.

Light fabrics (Wt. approx 200 gm/m or less) become stiff due to excessive add on weight. Suitable thinning with clean water upto 1:1 may be carried out after patch test.

Important - Patch Test

It is advisable to carry out a Patch Test by dipping a small sample of fabric to be flame protected in FRX-06 as per guidelines given under “Application “ check for stiffness and flame proof properties. Decrease dipping time, If fabric is too stiff and increase dipping time, If flame proof properties are not satisfactory.

To check flameproof properties of fabric, cut a sample apprx. 25mm x 200mm and hold it vertically with one end over a burner or burning candle. The fabric is flame proofed, if when fire is removed the burning of fabric ceases with 3 -4 seconds.

FRX-06 does not stain or Discolour the fabric.

Fabrics treated with FRX-06 can withstand drycleaning.
